One of the most daunting aspects of living with an autoimmune disease is the overwhelming health anxiety it can create. For years, I carried the weight of constant worry—thinking I had only a limited window of time before things might worsen. I was terrified of receiving test results, fearing they would reveal some irreversible issue. I also lived with the nagging concern of developing additional autoimmune conditions, knowing the increased risk that comes with one diagnosis.
I see this often in my clients too. They feel anxious, scared, and uncertain about what to do next, especially after trying countless approaches and still not seeing the results they hoped for.
But it doesn’t have to stay this way. Looking back, I realise that one of the reasons I struggled so much with health anxiety was because I wasn’t feeling well physically. When symptoms disrupt your daily life, worry becomes almost inevitable. I also learned that nutrient deficiencies and biochemical imbalances played a significant role in my anxiety. On top of that, I knew deep down that I wasn’t fully committing to my health—I was taking shortcuts, even after starting to make changes.
In this article, I want to share my approach to calming health anxiety, so you can feel more at ease and take control of your life and health:
1. Shift to a Positive Perspective
I know this is easier said than done, but the more you train your mind to focus on positivity, the better you’ll feel. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, watch films that make you laugh, and journal about the things and people you love. This helps redirect your brain toward positive thoughts. When fear creeps in, you’ll have a “bank” of uplifting memories and ideas to draw from.

2. Live in the Present Moment
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle was transformative for me. When fear surfaced, I reminded myself: “You are safe in this moment.” This simple thought often brought me back to calmness and helped me feel grounded.
Alongside mindfulness, I found that magnesium glycinate and matcha were absolute game-changers for my stress response and sleep. Magnesium glycinate supports relaxation and muscle recovery, while matcha—rich in natural L-theanine—promotes a sense of calm focus without the jittery effects of coffee. Both have been essential in helping me manage anxiety and autoimmune-related stress. 3. Be Proactive
When I felt stuck, creating an action plan always made me feel more in control. Even if I couldn’t implement changes immediately, having a roadmap gave me hope for a brighter future and a sense that I was taking meaningful steps toward improving my health.

4. Stay Connected
Talking to close friends and family about your concerns can provide immense relief, especially when they genuinely support you. Connecting with others who understand what you’re going through is also invaluable. This is one of the reasons I created The Autoimmune Forum—to offer a safe, supportive space where people with autoimmune conditions and chronic illnesses can learn, share experiences, and find solidarity. You can join the forum here.
5. Nourish Your Body and Soul
For years, I neglected myself—pushing through life, taking on too much, and ignoring the little voice inside that desperately needed care. Focusing on nourishing your body with healthy food, rest, and kindness can have a profound impact. Practices like meditation, yoga, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, or tui na can also help calm your nervous system and bring a sense of peace.
Another powerful tool for supporting your nervous system is Nurosym, a non-invasive neuromodulation device designed to promote relaxation and autonomic balance. It’s particularly beneficial for those with autoimmune conditions who experience heightened stress responses. Health anxiety doesn’t disappear overnight, and I still manage mine to this day. However, I now feel more at ease. I prioritise my health, stay present, and trust in the steps I’m taking. Over time, managing your anxiety can also improve your physical health. When we’re stuck in a constant state of fight-or-flight, it’s harder for the body to heal.
By following these steps, I hope you find it easier to calm your mind, nurture your body, and ultimately live a happier, healthier life.
